American Digger Magazine Undoubtedly the best magazine going for anyone who enjoys dug artifacts, be they Civil War, Rev War, colonial, bottles, or Indian. Lots of how-to articles and info, articles on digs, metal detecting, and more, plus several pages devoted to recent finds.

Relic Dealer Sites

Civil War Dealers and Collectors Association  This group is dedicated to preserving our rights as collectors and dealers of Civil War artifacts. Visit the website and voice your support for this most important cause!

Civil War Outpost Kennesaw, GA. Barry Banks' outstanding web page offers great relics, informative news, and one of the most relic-hunter friendly pages around. A good dealer, a good digger, and above all, a good friend.

Shiloh Relics Rafael, Lori, & Riley Eledge bring you some of the best in relics and antiques from Tennessee. Want a cannon? Check here. Also has one of the coolest web cam views on the net.

Civil War Relic Man Harry Ridgeway, from Winchester, Virginia, offers some beautiful pieces here. He has supplied some of the top collectors in the country, and makes buying a fun experience. Also some great info on cleaning relics, and spotting fakes.

Arsenal Artifacts Howard &Chrissy Alligood operate this NC website, offering some fine relics at fair prices. They have been specializing in artillery for thirty-nine years. Be sure to visit!

Stones River Trading Company Tom Hays, one of those nice Murfreesboro, Tenn. folks, runs this website. Be sure and visit him, and look at all the great things he has to offer. Well worth the time!

Middle Tennessee Relics Larry  Hicklen owns and operates this store near Stones River, Tennessee. A lot of great relics at fair prices, from one of the South's most legendary relic hunters.

J & W Relics A great relic site operated by Jack Masters in Nashville, TN. I guarantee you'll find something here you really like, and at a decent price.

Virginia Civil War Relics Plez Bagby runs this site, offering some very scarce and quality relics from his home state of Virginia. Very nice site!

 Blue/Gray Relics: Mark Shuttleworth owns this terrific website, with some fine quality relics at fair prices. Be sure to visit him there!

Southron Relics: Terry Hammonds operates this relic site online. Formally Volunteer Relics, he stocks a full line of nice artifacts, both Confederate and Union.

 

The Foot Soldier Military Antiques  A lot of nice unusual and hard to find relics at a fair price, so be sure to visit this site operated by Jim Keith

 

Fort Donelson Relics  John & Nikki Walsh run this great relic shop located in Dover, TN, right next to the Fort Donelson Battlefield Park.  Visit them in person if your up that way, but visit them online anytime.

Lost and Found Relic Long an established relic and gift shop in downtown Lynchburg, TN, Dwayne and Wilma Davis have taken their business one step further with this online site.

Old Rebellion War Relics and Miniatures David Gerber operates this site, which includes not only artifacts and display cases, but also beautiful miniatures.

 

Ohio Volunteer Relics Philip Ley is the owner and operator of this worthwhile relic site, which has a good selection of authentic artifacts at very reasonable prices.

 

The Pickett Post: Tim Garrett and Bill Henderson have developed a great reputation as having one of the largest selections and fair prices. If you are in Fredericksburg, be sure to stop in there shop, but if not be sure to visit their awesome website.

 

Sgt. Riker’s Trading Post:  Operated by Ransom and Rosalie Hundley, this one-stop relic shop offers artifacts, detectors, cases and more. Located in Ashland, Virginia.

 

Atlanta Arsenal: Daniel Ogle runs this superb Civil War relic site, with all types of quality artifacts. Located in Cartersville, GA. If you don't see what you want on his extensive website, email him and he'll see if he can locate it.

 

The Battery Relics: A great site run by Cecil Hopper, with relics spanning all eras, and specializing in quality Civil War items! Located in South Carolina.

 

Old Militaria .Com:    Robert Simmons' relic site, in Winchester, VA, has not only Civil War artifacts, but other Militaria from both the 1800s and 1900s.

Civil War Artillery Jack Melton, Jr. and Lawrence Pawl, authors and artillery authorities, have given us a wealth of information on CW Artillery in their books, and now also online. Well worth a visit for anyone interested in information on the artillery of the Civil War.

Howard Lanham's Home Page All sorts of information concerning Civil War uniform regulations and more.

Is It Civil War? quiz Another real goodie by Dr. Lanham, this one lets you decide if the pictured items are Civil War, or later. I recommend that every collector take it! But be warned: if you score less than 1, you'll be bared from buying at Greybird Relics.

Fake Alerts American Thunder Antiquities offers one of the best pages I've ever seen concerning fakes that us collectors may encounter. A must see, especially if you buy at flea markets, yard sales, or from anyone that flunked the above Is It Civil War? quiz..

Washington & Lee Associates This family owned and operated Manassas, VA, business has been active in research since 1989, and has been utilized by museums, professional associations, Civil War restoration projects, round tables and thousands of collectors, relic hunters and families. Check them out!

Relic Clubs

North Georgia Relic Hunters Association: Located in Marietta, GA, this group has done much to promote the hobby of relic hunting in Georgia. I'm a member. You should be, too! Check out "metal Detecting" for reprints of some of my most requested stories

North Virginia Relic Hunters Association: One of the oldest and largest clubs in the country. A well designed website, just like attending a meeting from the privacy of your own home.

Coastal Empire History Hunters Association The Savannah, GA club. Worth checking out even if you don't relic hunt the coastal lowlands, but a must if you do. Someday one of 'em is going to show me where to find that elusive Georgia button I'm always after down there.

Middle Tennessee Metal Detecting Club Go visit our good friends Donnie and Julia Vaughn at this club in Nashville, TN. Lots of good folks, good finds, and of course, good finds. Even Santa Claus is a member of this fine club! (sorry Bob, we just couldn't resist!)

Dixie Relic Recovery Club  Lamar White is president of this just formed relic club, located in Ringgold, GA. Their statement reads "Our mission is to preserve history through responsible relic recovery and record keeping. We will strive to maintain a good relationship with law enforcement and landowners by practicing good relic recovery ethics."  Some great people started this club, and it is growing by the month.

Museums and CW History

Civil War Life: The Soldiers Museum Located in Fredericksburg, VA, Terry Thomann has one of the most fascinating Civil War museums around. From a brick from John Brown's cell, to some nice weapons, and all in-between, this collection is put together in a setting that just makes you want to stay and look all day. Also has a great selection of books, displays, and gifts.

Civil War Shows: Jack Melton's page of shows, the place to find out what's coming up next in the world of Civil War shows and exhibitions. I've known Jack for years, and he just contributes more and more to the Civil War world each year.

Metal Detecting Emporiums
